The vintage cut-out dolls and the clothing

I sewed and fussy cut the dolls and the clothes yesterday.  My daughter, Laura, just loves them to bits.

If any of you decide to buy the fabric..it is available in the USA from Keepsake Quilting (click on the name to take you there). They have it in their catalogue. One of my readers mentioned it in a comment on the last post. Take a look at THIS Its a booklet made out this doll fabric...

Now the how to of this quilt and the dollies. The dolly fabric has a repeative pattern. The pattern I had said to cut the blocks a certain size but I felt it was a bit large. So I down sized the size of the doll block because I wanted as many different dolls on the quilt as I could get. It is a very simple quilt to make. Add the flaps and then the sashings, the outer border etc and it is of course finished.

The doll interfacing

The clothing pellon

With the individual dolls I ironed them onto a very very stiff iron on interfacing. I then satin stitched, a small width zigzag stitch, right around the whole doll and then fussy cut them out. Then with the clothes, I ironed the fabric onto a thin iron on pellon....small zig zag stitched around the outside of the clothes and then fussy cut them out. Easy peasy but a little time consuming.

This quilt is not my idea. I bought the kit, with the instructions inside. I am not very good at reading instructions...in fact I hate reading instructions. A terrible habit I know, but I prefer to look at a photo, the pattern pieces and figure it out for myself....I am terrible at keeping to the design of anything I do. I get very bored.... oh dear another terrible habit.

NEW FABRIC
Well I have to confess Im always buying new fabric but I dont put it on my blog!!

I bought some gorgeous Paddington Bear fabric the other day and some Beatrix Potter. I collect Beatrix Potter fabric and when I see it at a good price I buy it. Anyway... I bought this absoultley gorgeous fabric the other day on our auction site here in NZ. It is a Moda - French General fabric. I have another quilt that I drew up last year that I have in mind for this quilt. It is called Flower Power... I guess thats got you thinking... Well, I will get around to making these quilts that I have drawn up eventually... I just have to get my prioities right eh??!! LOL!! ... I am a little frustrated with myself that I just dont get my designs made up. My hubby is always telling me 'I dont need to buy other people's patterns, I can do it myself'....but I guess I just lack the confidence to do it. So the last lot and this lot of fabric is me putting my toe into the water and trying to do as my huBBy has suggested.... so watch the space but dont hold your breath.

Hugs

My Vintage Dolly Quilt Finished...

I have finished the quilt, I now just want to add some embellishments. This quilt looks alot nicer in real life than in the photo.

These photos are of the dolls that I will iron onto a very thick interfacing type fabric..it is almost like cardboard. I iron them onto it...do a very small zigzag around the edge then fussy cut. With the cut out clothes I iron them onto iron on pellon, small zigzag and then fussy cut. I will make a little drawstring bag out of the off cuts of fabric for the clothes and dolls to go onto.

Also, for those of you wondering what happened to the little girl Hope I mentioned in my last post. I was extremely persistant, which I can be if I have to be. In this case I could not rest until I found out what happened, as I said I was quite effected by it. I am very sad to say that Hope passed away on 10th February. Her mum, a brave and courageous lady, has resurrected her blog as a memorial blog. A very heart touching story. Life brings us some very hard stuff to deal with sometimes. Life is hard at times and it is very painful. My heart goes out to this precious lady, as she lost her husband a year ago, I think it was. If you believe in prayer please pray for Johanna.

Until next time

The 'other' quilt Im working on...

Well the title says the 'other' quilt Im working on...its really one of the many quilts Im working on.. I wouldnt like to list how many projects I have on the go as it is rather embarrassing.

This is the first block for Seasons of the Heart by Leanne Knell for Petals and Patches. I had a bit of a disaster with the corner blocks so I had to use something from my stash to fix that up. Im a bit naughty when I make things from patterns. I find it very hard to stick to it and I go off and do my own thing.

Also here are the Shepherd Bush Stocking I have done... as I said in the last post I just have to make them up. 3 made and 3 more to go...one for each child.

Also I have been meaning to show you some of my beading creations. I really enjoy making these bracelets. They are made with needle and thread..which I love to work with...

These are made from shell... Paua shell and a mother of peral type shell..

This is called a Garden Bracelet.. I have made many of these in many different colour ways and given them away as gifts.

So thats me for today....

Shepherd Bush Stockings..

Well, this is for the benefit of some of my cross-stitching followers. I havnt posted anything that I have made before as far as cross-stitch goes. I dont get to cross-stitch much these days but I have to say the The Shepherd Bush designs would have to be one of my favourites.

This photo is, of course, the cover of one of one of Tina Richards Hermans designs. This is the one I am going to make for my 4 year old little girl, Laura. I have stitched Mary's Stocking, Peter's Stocking and Christian's Stocking isnt quite finished. I have not sewn any of them up. I went to take a photo of them this morning and someone, in my family of 7, has taken one of the AA batteries out of my camera, hence the reason why there isnt a photo. As soon as I find it I will post some pics.

I have signed up for the most gorgeous looking BOM through The Fat Quarters Shop you can sign up here It starts in May 2010. I think the fabrics are gorgeous...

I have a question....Can anyone please explain how I answer comments? I have received some lovely responses to comments I have left on others blogs and I dont know how to do it from my blog....as over the past year I would love to have replied to many comments....and recently too. So can someone please tell me how to do this? Thanks heaps.

and how very exciting...in 2 more days I draw the winners of my giveaways!! I wonder who will be the winner..

Until the next post

A vintage dolly quilt

I havnt posted on here for a few days as Ive been busy at my sewing machine. This is a kit I bought at the Calico Christmas quilt show we have here in Auckland every year..this was back in November 2009..not that long ago and I decided Id make it.... I have alot of UFO kits sitting around that I WILL get around to doing eventually.

This kit also has more fabric for the indivdual dolls. You iron them onto a stiff backing and do a nice little zig zag stitch around them... There is also a fabric with the dress up clothes printed on it...this fabric gets ironed onto iron-on-pellon so that the clothes can be played with along with the individual dolls... very cute I must say. The quilt, to me is rather boring to look at...so when it is quilted I am going to add some embellishments... I am an embellishing specialist LOL.. I love to bead things, stitch on things etc etc ... so this will be dressed up when I have finished.

This is a close up picture of the frame around each doll. They are like a flap...they are quite a nice finished to the picture.

Also I just wanted to say.. I have come across a few blogs lately of 'burnt out bloggers'..thats my name for them. People that are disillusioned with the blogging community due to being hurt by things that have been said or other things. One blog, that I visit, the owner has decided to leave her blog as an archieve and start one up that has no commments..she has been burnt...people have been taking advantage of her and unkind things have been said. I was quite disturbed to read this...it really bothered me. It made me think about why I blog?? I blog because I really enjoy meeting up with fellow crafters, sewers etc. I find it an inspring community...if it wasnt for the comments and me visiting other blogs I wouldnt get half as much made. Im inspired to create and create some more. We are supposed to be a support for each other and enjoy each others creativity arent we?? I love to give... giveaways are something I really enoy doing...I love to bless others....but I dont like being taken advantage of myself and none of us do.. I think I will be making an little more effort to thank people for freebie patterns and to compliment and encourage others.. So this is my little ten cent piece worth,(one of our sayings here in NZ).. lets make the crafting bloggy community a place were we inspire and enjoy one anothers creativity....... oh, I havnt had any probs at all..Ive just come across a few along the way that have caused me to get a little upset.....

Take care...and the draw for both of my giveaways is on Sunday the 14th and I will post the winners on my blog on Monday the 15th..
